Covering a huge 400 hectares (989 acres), Tsinghua University was founded in 1911 on the site of Xichun Garden (later changed to Tsinghua Garden), an attached imperial garden of the Old Summer Palace. Named Tsinghua Xuetang (清华学堂) and funded with part of the Boxer indemnity, the school was a Western-style preparatory institution for government sponsored students sent to study in the United States. Although Tsinghua University has a comprehensive university degree program, its main focuses are science and engineering. Prominent alumni produced by Tsinghua include current President Xi Jinping (习近平), former President Hu Jintao (胡锦涛), former Prime Minister Zhu Rongji, and Nobel Prize (physics) winners Yang and Li. The student body totals more than 31,000, of which 17,000 are graduate students. There are plenty of foreigners as well, with 3,450 international students from 112 countries, in particular South Korea, the USA, Germany, Japan, and France.
